NaBloPoMo: I is for “Inconceivable!”

10Nov07

For the month of November, I’ll be participating in NaBloPoMo. This means a blog post every single day! To give myself some help coming up with 30 posts, I’m going to follow a pattern. Monday through Saturday each week, I will blog on a letter of the alphabet; Sundays will be whatever I come up with! You can read all my NaBloPoMo alphabet posts here.

“Inconceivable!” “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

When I was young, my family would read The Princess Bride together. My brother and I loved it, and when I first saw the film, I fell even more in love with the story.

Adventure, love, humour, and scandal – a perfect story! It remains one of my favourite books and movies, and I’ll read or watch it any chance I get. When I was in Grade 8, I met Cary Elwes on a flight between Vancouver and LA, and I could have DIED I was so excited.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the movie release, and I’ve been thinking back frequently to when we would read the book as a family.  My parents cultivated in me a love of reading from a very young age, and it was through books like The Princess Bride. Books that are another world, books that excite and scare and inspire you, books that take you into another person’s mind.

Books that are nothing short of inconceivable, in all the best senses of the word.

Thanks, Mum and Dad, for introducing me to these other worlds. I can’t imagine my life without them.
